"Su From So!" – A Movie That Has the Audience Suspended in Laughter! What Is This Film Like?

When one speaks of a film, it has to take the audience on a ride of rollercoasters. To engage them, a movie should have a powerful story and surprising turns. Coupled with that, funny moments and suspenseful scenes are what keep the viewer engaged and "Su From So!" possesses all these aspects!

In a typical mass movie, we have a hero, a heroine and a villain. The hero battles the villain and with a single punch, the villain is sent flying a kilometer away or spins around in the air before landing. Then, eventually, there is a victory for the hero. For viewers who are fed up with such repetitive scenes, this movie presents something new and refreshing.

Right from the start to the last shot, it is loaded with such laugh-out-loud moments, colloquies in our native Kannada particularly the Mangaluru ascent, the aroma of rural life and real performances. These elements have earned this film many hearts.

Coming to the story, the movie brings out how superstitions in the villages cause all sorts of misfortunes. It depicts the effects of blind beliefs on individuals, how cheats prey on them and how people, fearing the consequences, take irrational measures only to create other consequences. The movie portrays all this very beautifully.

It also indicates the amount of respect and priority villagers accord to their local leaders and how these leaders assume responsibility for the affairs of the village. The movie also addresses the sorrow and hardships of an orphaned lady. The first half will leave the audience in stitches, with the second half bringing about a twist and concluding with a worthwhile message.

Many of the highlights shown in the trailer appear in the first half itself, making the viewer wonder what’s next. But rest assured the second half won’t disappoint!

The one thing that caught my attention is that it's not obvious who the real hero or heroine is. Shaneel Gautham, who acts as Ravi anna, is referred to as the lead, but J.P. Tuminadu, who acts as Ashoka and also directed the movie, is also a possible protagonist. Because the team has confirmed the lead to be Shaneel, that is cleared. But you won't still be able to determine who the heroine is!

Moving on to the performances, all the actors have fully lived their roles and performed very naturally. At no point does it look like overacting. This naturalness may be attributed to their costumes, natural Mangaluru Kannada dialogue and their extensive stage experience. It all looks like real-life conversation to the viewer. That's how well they have performed.

You’ll see familiar faces like Shaneel Gowtham, Prakash Tuminadu, J.P. Tuminadu, Mime Ramdas, our dearest Bhava Pushparaj Bolar, Arjun Kaje,  Sandhya Arakere who’ve all been seen in films or plays before. If asked who the "star actor" is, it would have to be Raj B Shetty. The rest may be new to moviegoers, but they are all seasoned theater actors.

Shaneel Gowtham was previously spotted as Bulla in Kantara and the cook in Sa.Hi.Pra.Shale Kasaragod movies. Prakash Thuminadu also played comic roles in these two films. In the case of J.P. Thuminadu, those who watched him play the Priya's husband in Sapta Sagaradaache Ello Side-B may be surprised to realize it's the same individual here! His acting and direction are both great.

While some may find Raj B. Shetty's acting to be too much, I personally think that it was appropriate for the character it was a perfect portrayal of the cunning and deceit. His last scene when he ran was well executed.

Returning to direction, J.P. Thuminadu has performed a great job in both storytelling and presentation.

Music-wise, although Sumedh K is a new face to the film world, he already gained recognition through his YouTube channel with tracks like "Karma" and "Tavare." He has done a wonderful job with the music. Some songs and background scores really touch the hearts of the audience. The music scores complement the horror and suspense scenes wonderfully.

S. Chandrashekharan's cinematography is also noteworthy. He has done justice to the rural setting, which is a big asset to the film.

In all, this movie produced under Raj Shetty's Lighter Buddha films banner by a fresh team is well crafted and already a hit. It will surely do more in the coming days. You won't even know how time passes from beginning to end. You'll see it completely engrossed, with no distractions and enjoy it every second.

After such a long while, the Kannada film fraternity has got a really special and fresh film like this one. You have to see this movie. Don't wait for it on OTT. Visit the theatre and watch it as it is supposed to be watched!

My ratings: 10/10
